ABOUT US
The Lighthouse in the Heart of Greenville, South Carolina
WHO WE ARE
Since our beginnings more than 150 years ago, John Wesley United Methodist Church has served as a Beacon of Light in the Greenville community. John Wesley UMC is the oldest historically black United Methodist Church in Greenville, South Carolina. Our origins began under the leadership of Rev. James Rosemond, who was a leading figure in establishing black Methodism in Upstate South Carolina.
Initially founded in 1866 under the name Silver Hill Methodist Episcopal Church, the name was retained until the present church was built between 1899 and 1903. In 1902, our name was changed to John Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church and continued until 1939 when unification of three Methodist bodies took place. When a merger was made in 1968 with The Evangelical United Brethren Church and The Methodist Church, our church then became known as John Wesley United Methodist Church. John Wesley UMC is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
John Wesley’s story is also about our many people who have made strong contributions both to the United Methodist Church and to the Greenville community over the years. Our history is rich and we continue to seek the will of God as He leads us and prepares us to serve for another 150 years.
